WB6ADC and AF6O hid two transmitters, both line of sight to the start point.
The first transmitter was in a park on Grand Avenue about 2 miles from the start point,
it ran 1mW and was weakly heard.
The second transmitter was located on a hill in SW Torrance, it was running 30W to a colinear antenna and
was heard strongly around the LA basin.
The intent was to make the far transmitter seem like it was close and the near transmitter sound like it was far away.
Apparently it worked and all hunters went after the Torrance transmitter first.
WB6JPI heard the Torrance transmitter at his home in Fontana and required 20dB attenuation to get a bearing.
He decided to hunt it, probably under the mistaken impression that it was close. He set out at 7:40 pm and signed in at the Torrance transmitter at 10:20
as an unofficial hunter. Another unofficial team, KJ6HZ/K6RRA signed in at 2:40 am!
Two other unofficial teams, N6YKE/Jeremy and KK6ME/KD6LOR, signed in at both transmitters.
Now if we could just get some of the unofficial hunters to show up at the start point...
