Hider: KA6KZZ

T9
This transmitter was hidden within the reflections of T1 from Mount Baldy. Those that thought that all signals coming from Mt. Baldy must therefore be reflections likely skipped the real transmitter hidden there. Those that went looking for the reflections were rewarded with a real T. T9 was located on Palmer Canyon Road north of the Padua Ave. Theater and outside the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. The transmitter was 100mw into a dual band mobile antenna, horizontally polarized, mounted on an ammo can.

This T was found by KF6GQ/KD6LAJ, N6XFC and K6SNE. They all arrived between 7:50 and 8:20.

T0
This transmitter proved to be the easiest of the evening even though it was late coming on the air. This is where the hider was located. The transmitter was about 500mw into a 11 element yagi, vertically polarized, pointing north. It was intended to provide more cover for T9 with reflections from Baldy.

Specifically the antenna was hung in a convenient tree at the end of Malta Pl. just off Lake Matthews Dr., south of Lake Matthews.

This transmitter was found by KF6GQ/KD6LAJ, K6SNE, N6IDF, N6XFC and N6AIN/WA6PYE/Leonard.

T2
Interestingly, this transmitter proved to be the most difficult of all the hidden T's as it was found by only one team. This T was located about 50 yards off of Lake Matthews Dr. at the intersection of Grande Vista Ave. The transmitter was a Yeasu VX1 on low power placed inside the plastic bag with the sign in sheet. The bag was at the base of a real estate agent's sign next to the road.

Even though it was on the route to and from T0, it is too bad that only KF6GQ/KD6LAJ stopped to sign in.

T1
It turns out that the real headscratcher of the evening was T1. It looks like everyone correctly ascertained that it was a Baldy Bounce. Some went for it right away and others left it for later.

From T0 it appears deceptively easy - reasonably strong signal and a good bearing. The problem turned out in that 'you can't get there from here'. The maps show roads that don't go through, and don't show the roads that go to the T. While maps show Dawson Canyon Rd. as going through, it doesn't. It is really only accessable via Temescal Canyon Rd. and Park Canyon Dr. The actual road to the T is a power line maintenance road and is not marked private or no trespassing even though every other road off Dawson Canyon probably is. The T was at N33.78711 W117.45472.

The T itself was 500mw into a dual band mobile antenna, horizontally polarized, mag mounted to the side of a big ammo box.

It seems that the team of N6AIN/WA6PYE/Leonard went directly there as they signed in at 9:45. N6IDF/KF6GWV and N6XFC did not get there until just after 3 am.

So overall the hunt looked like this.

Epilog
An hour or so after all the teams checked into T0 and left, I started shutting down T0 and packing up. Then I went down to pick up T2 and was surprised to find only the one sign in. No one was in the area so I shut it down and picked it up. I planned to go pick up T1 as well, but on the way out I saw XFC and IDF parked at the intersection of Cajalco Rd. and La Sierra Rd. with their heads down looking at maps. They were apparently still looking for T1. Rather than drive in front of them and lead them in, I made a quick detour and headed directly home for some sleep and let them search to their heart's content. Looking at the time they signed in, I am glad I did. I came back the next morning and picked up T1 and T9.

I hope you all enjoyed the hunt.
