The T went on the air at 8:00 pm. The
transmitter was driving 10 Watts in to a quarter wave 2
Meter mag-mount antenna affixed to the roof of the hider's
vehicle. The carrier was continuous per the hunt rules.
After receiving multiple complaints from the start point
that the signal was barely detectable, a backup transmitter
capable of more output power replaced the original T. The
power was initially set at 25 Watts to squelch any
additional noise from the start point about the signal being
difficult to detect. Five minutes after word was received
that all hunters had detected the signal, the transmitter
power was reduced to 15 Watts. The PicCon controller
connected to this T was stuck on intermittent transmission.
This necessitated manual triggering of the transmission
cycle every 20 seconds to enable continuous (Nearly)
transmission.
This signal allowed all three teams to find the T.
The T was located on Baybar Rd, North of Mission Mill Rd, in
Whittier. This location, along the East fence of the 605
freeway, is just inside the Western hunt area boundary.
Precise T location:
Lat/Lon:
34°1'12.24" N
118°2'51.72" W
The hider remembers hunting a 3rd Saturday T in this
location once before in 1991/1992. It was possibly hidden by
K0OV.
