WA6RJN’s (Doug) Story
When the signal first came up I couldn’t hear it. After IDF did some adjusting I got a bearing of 310. After drawing the bearing on my map I noticed it when through Figueroa Mtn, a place I had hid in 1984. The signal conditions seemed to match. I joined the hunters in the upper parking lot and got a confirming reading of 310. I took Crenshaw to the 405, to the10 and on to PCH. There was no signal once I left the starting point until a little before Mugu rock where I took an on the fly reading which still pointed in the general direction of Figueroa Mtn. After a lunch stop in Ventura I proceeded on through Santa Barbara to the 154. Still no signal. I didn’t expect any signals along the coast as the coastal mountains would shield me from the T. As I crested the pass on 154 the signal picked up as I had hoped. Not just the main T but now I was hearing a handful of Ts. After taking a couple of misleading readings that pointed west and southwest, I found one that pointed to Figueroa. I took the eastern route to the top. Although I had been to Figueroa several times before, I had never gone this way. Then I realized that I had forgotten to get gas before getting on this road. I had a little more that a half tank. I hoped that would be enough. Along this road I kept getting very strong readings to the east. I decided to ignore the readings hoping they were reflections. I reached Figueroa Mountain road and tried going up the road to Cachuma Peak but is was gated. I continued west on Figueroa Mtn Rd. The signal was consistently pointing east. Finally I came to a point just north of Ranger Peak. This is where the road to T1 took off. The signal had swung around to 340. Down the road I went until I found the "Jam This" mobile complete with hiders.
I donned my coat, hat and gloves (cold weather gear is always a good this to take on hunts) and got out in the 34 degree gale force wind and talked to David. I like the monkey hanging from the beam. After signing into T1, I sniffed out T4 and signed into it. Hmmmm, another monkey.
I returned to Figueroa Mtn Rd where I heard the Michael Jackson T. It seemed to point down the road so off I went. I stopped about a half mile later and couldn’t hear the MJ T anymore but I could hear the "descending note" T (T12?). I decided to go back to the road to T-1 but this time I continued pasted where T1 was. Farther down the road I found another monkey and T12(?) in an ammo box.
I again returned to Figueroa Mtn Rd. I heard the MJ T and decided that it must be right there. After some sniffing (and sliding) I found the monkey and the T.
I knew there was still a T9 and a talking T8 so I decided to head toward Figueroa Mtn. Along the way I found T8 on a side dirt road.
Off to Figueroa. I came across EKS and AIN and heard the Under-the-Rock T. I found another road off to the right. The signal pointed in that direction so I went up to the end of the road. EKS/AIN were right behind me. I quickly put on the cold weather gear and grabbed the sniffer. I found the T while they were about a bush away and signed in. Just then they saw the monkey hanging in tree. I handed them the sign-in sheet and proceed to find the actual T.
I was able to leave them behind as I continued down Figueroa Mtn Rd and took the road to Figueroa Peak. I was making good time up this dirt road until I ran into traffic. I was stuck behind this slow moving traffic for about a half mile until the large black bear and her two cubs left the road and went back into the forest.
I stopped at the top and took a reading. The signal came from the other side of the radio installations. I took the access road to end where a found a car and someone camping there. We exchanged greetings and I explained what I was doing and what a T hunt was. He remarked that he had seen another person setting up something near by. Out came the sniffing gear and I tracked down T9 (no monkey !).
On the way up I had heard a T that identified as T10 (T6?). On the way down I started hunting T10 and then also heard T5. By there signal strengths I knew they had to be near by. After a couple rounds of sniffing (near where the bears left the road), I found T5 and its monkey.
I estimated the T10 (T6?) was about a quarter mile north east of the road, probably on another side road. I would have continued to hunt but I had already found 8 Ts and only had a quarter tank of gas. I left via the western route but since it was dark I never saw the Neverland Ranch.
It was one of the most fun hunts I have been on because of the proximity of the Ts to the road and that the roads were good (except for a muddy spot). The monkeys were a great touch! Thanks for a great hunt.
