I had one bearing on T7 north up I-5 (in the red LEDs on my external s-meter) and 2 other signals from
Somewhere north and east. My thought was that the north east bearings where some kind of bounce Don
had worked out to make us go there first. So I decided to go up the 405 to I-5.
At Mulhollend Dr. on 405 the Signal was still north. At the I-5 and 14 it was still up the I-5. At
Magic Mountain Pky. still up the I-5. At the top of the grade it looks like it might be on Liebre Mt.
road and there are 2 more Ts I can hear. I decided to go on the old Ridge Route Rd. It has
been some time since I have been on it.
The old road is still in good shape. Some dirt areas but most of it is still paved. About 1/2 way
up it, I started hearing T8 talking T. Damn! Looks like it's up on the road to Whitaker Pk. Well I well get
it on they way back on I-5 and now there is another one over there too. Doesn't Don get tired of putting out Ts?
At 7N23, Liebre mt road, I went up and east. Shortly after reaching the top I could hear 3 Ts
quite well. Looks like Snake T and T3 are first on the road. I came to a road off to the right and the snake T
is strong and points down it. Right on to the road and very soon it's a UR there and to the right and
behind me. I turn around and park. Short sniff and find it. 1:35 pm and I Need new socks now.
Back in the Jimmy and it looks like T3 is farther down this same road. Turn around again. This road goes
quit a ways and up a hill to a big Oak Tree. There’s a UR there signal. It's in the Tree with a grave under it. It's
1:45 pm. No ants when I was there and I put the sign in sheet back where I found it.
Now on to T7. Back out on the main dirt road and east. It's not long before I have a UR there and
there's a road to the right again. I drive in and shortly there is an open meadow. I get out and sniff it
out. It's 2:00 PM and I Need new socks again.
No more Ts up here so back down to 138 and out to I-5 and South. At Smokey Bear road I hear the other talking
T off to the right. Off I go and down the dirt road. At the entrance to the Hungry Valley State Rec Area the 2
lady Rangers tell me “It’s over there" pointing to the south side. “The other hunter was already here and left."
They tell me how to get there and it's one of those "You can't get there from here" things. 15 minutes of
driving later and I find it, less than a mile from the Rec Area entrance gate. It's 3:19 PM
Now to T8. I know where the short cut to the road up to Whitaker pk is. It's just before the break check area
on the south bound side. So Off the freeway and down the hill to the road. All of a sudden it's a UR there
and behind me. Good view of Liebre Mt from here. Know wonder it was strong up there. Seam Wayne and Pete
found it already. It’s 3:42 PM
Now to find T2 and the LAJ T. The Bearing at the start point seam to be coming from The Azusa or Monrovia area.
Since Don lives in Monrovia, it could be there. Hours later and a long trip up 39 and back just to make sure, I am out
sniffing in the San Gabriel River bed. I Go over the bridge and up the bike path but it's back on the other side.
Going back around I find a hole in the fence down into the river bed and up onto a dam wall. It's still in font
and pointing back over where I had been on the bike path. There is water going over the dam, about an inch deep.
I walk through the water and the signal is strong and just to the left up the river, like me. After about 30 minutes
smashing around in weeds with gnats getting in my nose and ears, I finally find the sign in sheet, then the J antenna.
I signed in at exactly 7:00 PM.
Now to find the LAJ T. I decide to go out the 210 till I hear it or reach the 15. Just before the 15 I hear something
on sideband. I get off the freeway and park. After listening for a while I finely decide it's the Riverside hunt I am
hearing, not the LAJ T. That's it. Going home. Park the Jimmy and close the garage door and it's exactly 9:00 PM.
Good Hunt Don I had fun.
