I have been having trouble with the radio taking
bearings when in motion on dirt roads. Of course, I forgot all about it when I
am at home and for the last two or three hunts, have been plagued with the
need to stop to take bearings. Well it came to bite me at the San Diego hunt
when I couldn't hear the transmitter at the start until I tuned on it in
sideband where others were getting bearings on dopplers.
Well at the start of this hunt others heard
the T and I didn't. But, I took the 48 degree bearing given by Scott and
Steve/Deryl and went off to the Cajon pass. Knowing half of LA was going to
Las Vegas, I chose to take the 110 to the 105 to the 605 to 210 to the 15.
This went very well and had no problems forcing me below 75. First heard the
signal in the pass some 84 miles from the start. The 15 was messed up but got
to Summit where I met Don. We shared a gas pump and were observed by some
other Emuburger eating hunters.
Good bearing at Summit and on north up the 395.
Heard two more Ts, but they were weak. I had thoughts of getting to Bishop and
buying some sheepherders bread and was day dreaming about just how many loaves
to buy when the signal shifted east and went away. Didn't make LonePine. I
still had the other two Ts and they were more north so I went after them
first. Quickly losing T1, I found the north most T and then following the
aqueduct roads found the next transmitter in the next canyon SW. On to the
next canyon where T1 seemed to be along with at least two other transmitters
and I got hit by a bout of diarrhea and pooped allover a number of places.
Found the main T1 and at least one other in that canyon and was intertangled
with Don/Steve, Steve/Deryl and saw Ron
Steve/Deryl found a lady who had driven off the
road and into the ditch on her way to her campground Her rearend was over the
edge and although the front was on the road?, you couldn't get past her to
pull her out. I was across the creek and by yelling and son real ham radio
talk we had three cars of eager savours. We conneced up my portable winch to
her battery with Dons jumper cables and the snatch block end set up by Deryl
and to a big chunk of concrete. Steve and Steve anchored the real of her car
so it wouldn't swing more into the creek and the winch pulled her out. The
Wenn wins again.
But between the pooping, wenchwinching and
no lunch, I was done and headed home. Oh in about the middle of the hunt I was
frustrated in having to stop to take bearings and started to search for the
loose thingy. I found two not one loose connectors, which were not easy to
tighten but worth the effort. Sensitivity seems good, but I will check it
before next weekend.
