I got started later than I wanted to
at around 11:30. Coming into Northridge I could hear the N6MI T
on the radio connected to the vertical but the signal on the beam was
very weak. I got off the freeway to take a reading and discovered the
gamma match had broke. I pulled out the old soldering iron (hadn't done
this on the road is a while) and repaired the antenna. Coming into
Burbank the signal got much stronger and seemed to point toward
Glendale. Proceeding further, the signal became weak and changed
directions. I also heard another T sending MOH over and over coming
from around Griffith Park (must have been a decoy T planted by another
hunter). After realizing the MI T was not near Burbank, I
extended the bearing line and found it went through Hacienda Heights (a
certain T hunter lives near there). Arriving at Hacienda Height I found
the signal had once again disappeared. Learning from the first time, I
decided to drive south over the hills. Reaching the top the signal
showed up again. Now I realized it was from the ranging near Modjeska
Peak. I plotted a course. After passing through Silverado Cyn and
climbing up the dirt road, I found T7 and the "fast" T sending N6MI.
Progressing further up the road I passed Bob and Kathy. Found the "Go"
T, T8 and T6. I had heard T9 but never strongly. I back tracked until I
heard it again. I was behind me. I had passed it twice. Finally found
it and went home going east via Bedford Rd that comes out by I15.
Interesting rules. Start anywhere, the
one with the most Ts wins, in case of a tie the first one to find the
Ts wins. Seems the MJN just couldn't wait. He found the Ts the night
before, (Friday).
