Doug's Story about the
January 28th 2017 Meathead
Too many things to get done in too short of time. I left
later than I wanted for the hunt. Of course there was a
problem on the freeway. The solution was to get off and get
back on at the next on ramp. Sounded good until I saw the on
ramp was closed. Closer to the starting point there was more
freeway congestion.
I arrived at the starting point 20 minutes late. The other
teams had left. I heard the signal at 85 degrees. That put
it toward Oak Glen or Beaumont. I traveled down the 57/60.
About Riverside I lost the signal due to the hills.
I stopped for lunch in Moreno Valley. Still no signal. I
kept listening for several minutes and finally heard the
signal at about 10 degrees. It was readable but weak. I kept
listening for several more minutes but once again, no
signal. Then the signal appear again as it had briefly
before and vanished again. I surmised that I was hearing the
signal only when a jetliner flew between my location and T2.
I headed up Redlands Blvd and jogged over to Live Oak
Cyn/Glen Oak Cyn. The signal was constantly getting
stronger. I reached Bryant St and headed north. A strange
thing was happening. As I went north the signal was getting
super strong which didn’t make since considering I was in a
canyon at the foot of the Big Bear mountains. I arrived at
Hwy 38 and was getting a “you are there” signal. In front of
me was a power line in a field. I found the road that
parallels it and came to T2. There was an odd man parked
there but he didn't seem to be a threat.
Heading east on Hwy 38 I starting looking for T9. After
going back and forth along a stretch for road, I thought
about trying to get to the other side. Garnet St crossed the
river but apparently the recent rains had taken it out.
There were lots of Road Closed signs. Returning to about the
middle of my wanderings, I was going to hoof it to the
river. That’s when N6EKS/N6AIN showed up. We walked up to
the river with the sniffers and confirmed the T was on the
other side, pointing to a white spot on a hill.
We found a river crossing a little farther to the east,
crossed it, and proceeded west. After taking a windy road
along the hills we came to a dead end. After finding the
right road, T9 was found next to a pole with a white sign
(the white spot).
This was a good hunt even though LAJ had to hide it in a
hurry. The original bearing had me in the wrong area and T9
was a challenge to find. I hope the GQ/LAJ team will have an
easier time on the next hide.
T2
Garnet St is gone.
