From the start, we got a bearing at 55 Degrees to T
RJN. This seemed to go up the Cajon pass. We figured that this was going
to be a Vegas hunt. On the way up I-15, my brand new pre-amp stopped working,
so we got off of the freeway and disassembled the pre-amp from the yagi
(this took about 20 minutes due to the fact that I had sprayed the entire
pre-amp and associated connectors with clear enamel). With only our fingers
and teeth we were able to get the pre-amp off the antenna. Luckily the
signal at this time was strong enough to be heard without the pre-amp.
When we got to the top of Cajon pass (Summit Inn), we took more bearings.
We were surprised to see that the bearings were identical to bearings that
we took two years ago on the hide that AF6O put on. At that time the T
was near the Mid Hills campground. So, now we knew which way to go! When
we got to Barstow, we took more bearings, and confirmed that the bearing
was still pointing at Kelso. So we headed east out I-40 and got off at
Kilbaker Rd. and headed up into Mojave National Reserve. Oh! At Barstow
we started to hear a second transmitter this one was iding as T1. As the
sun was going down we passed the "Lost Hunters Team" going the other way.
We didn't stop because we have an unwritten rule, that states, "we must
find our first T while it is still light" and we had about 11 minutes 23
seconds to accomplish that. So we went exactly the same way to find the
T that we had done in the snow two years ago. When we got there we found
that T1 wasn't in the same bush, but it was within spitting distance. We
signed in second after the Lost Team. Then we went after T RJN, which was
NE of our present position. After driving up this long dirt road we came
across the lost team, who where lost, going away from the T. After talking
with them and finding out that they hadn't found T RJN yet, we left to
locate it. We hiked up a small rocky hill where we found the T. We where
the first to sign in at it. Where are all the other hunters? We could hear
T4 & T2 from that location and started to go towards the signal. But
at a Y in the road we went the wrong way, and I noticed that my gas tank
was nearing empty (<1/4 tank, I go looking for gas). So we headed north
to get to I-15 and found that we weren’t that far from a gas station. But
after a short discussion (no fighting) we decided that this all-day was
finished. So we left to go eat at Baker. On the way home I kept the radio
on for the T promised by RJN to be on the way home. As we approached Hodge
Rd. I heard the signal, Steve was sawing Z's at this time and I really
didn't want to turn around and go away from home, so we kept on going home.
We had a great hunt, too bad there was so many T's to find. Who was it
that started this multiple T hides anyway!
