Story
We started the
hunt with my new Jeep Liberty Renegade, and
also finished the hunt with it. At the start we got much higher
bearings than
most of the other hunters, 25 degrees +/- 10. So we left the hill going
to Hwy
2 to Angeles Forest Hwy.
There we came across N6AIN who was in front of us. At the start, I told
everybody that the signal was coming from Mt.
Pacifico, so we latched onto
that
info. At the turn off to Mt. Pacifico & Mt. Gleason, we turned left
towards
M. Gleason, to go up to where we could get a good signal that wasn’t
being
bent, reflected, attenuated, and screwed around with. We went about 1
mile up,
Deryl went about .75 miles up. From Deryl’s spot the bearing was about
5
degrees, but at the next turnout, it had changed to 15 degrees, which
actually
passed quite close to the T. As we went north on the 14 Fwy, the signal
was
getting weird, it got weak and the signal bounce off of the San
Gabriel’s was
sometimes much stronger than the true signal. We decided to turn right
on Hwy
58 because we felt we could cross the desert up to Randsberg and save
miles. We
went as far as North Edwards and took Av 140 north, the signal being
very
strong and right in front of us. We took this almost all the way to the
T, but
as we got closer, the signal started to turn to the right, so we took a
diagonal to Av. 145 and continued north. Had to do a bit of cross
country to
actually get to the T, to prevent back tracking. All in all, the Jeep
did a
good job on those dirt roads, but I really need to get some better
tires. ¾ of
a tank of gas by the time we got home, so the hunt fell within my gas
usage
requirements. Our hunt was somewhat uneventful, but I bet Jippy or MI,
or TNJ
have some good stories, especially how one could get up to 360 miles on
the
hunt.
