Meathead Hunt

I had some really off the wall ideas about our next Meat Head, but Steve tempered me down a bit. We wanted to hide fairly close to the LA. area, because of the gas prices, still being so high. We know that the Big Bear area has been used several times in the last year or so, if fact the last WWNIATT was very close to the area that we chose. Many many years ago, I had the pleasure of finding someone at the Coon Creek Jump off. They had sent us all to Mt. Jancito with a great bounce. But I knew that many knew of the Coon Creek Jump Off, so we looked for a lesser known location. About halfway between Onyx Peak turn off, and Heart Bar, there is a road that goes into the forest. This apparently was going to be a village development and had a once used gate that could be closed, but I guess they never got the sales they needed to keep it up. There are several small cabins and roads in every direction. The main road is Rainbow La. You follow it in past several residences and driveways stay on it for about 2-3 miles. It keeps getting better as previous drivers gave up and turned around. Finally you get to a spot that is defiantly a four wheel drive road (this is about a 10 min. walk if you should desire). When I first went there with my wife, we walked up and I thought that it was okay to drive up. I had seen several Quad tracks on the road so I knew it went somewhere. We walked up to the saddle and could see Mt. San Jacinto! Great spot. When Steve and I went there to place the transmitter, we drove up to within 150’ of the T. If Bob, JPI had got there I know he would have gone all the way to the T. Bob ZHZ and Cathy CYG did get to the T, but they chose to walk instead of drive. See the pictures of the road and T. This T was Iding as LAJ T2. The rest of the T’s where spread around the area, to give all the hunters something else to hunt, if they found the main T too soon. I hid the Snake T at 2N93 where it connects to 38, and I hid a AF6O box up 2N93 about 1 mile. This T could be heard at the Snake T and several points along 38. Two more T’s where hid by Steve LAJ in the Coon Creek Area. One was running about 500mw. To a four element beam pointed at Mt. San Jancito. The second T he hid was a Squawk Box T Iding as “T One Three”. This was hidden up on a very narrow dirt path, in about 2/3 mile. I believe this is where TNJ & TQQ met their Waterloo. They told me that the antenna got broke and they bent the running board protectors on Wayne’s new Expedition (sorry it was Steve’s fault). I was hiding two T’s up on 2N10, one in back of Snow Summit, that required a hike of about 150’ up to the top of Snow Summit. This T was running about 500mw. To a J pole, Iding as T9. The other one was at the top back side of Moonridge ski area. This was a 5mw. T Iding as T3 into a four element beam pointed down at Hart Bar. The road going to it has an interesting section of bumps, that get you at any speed.  The last T, T8 Iding as GQ T2 was at the cabin that I was staying at in the Moonridge area. We had drinks, food (snacks), though some got pizza. And a place to sleep if needed. We had fun putting on the MeatHead hunt, and want to thank all that came out to hunt. I’m really sorry for all those bounces that got in the way. And those that went up to the Onyx Peak RF towers, sorry that you couldn’t get to the T from there. I heard that the signal was pinning the meters with all attenuation in. Hope that even with all the problems, you had a good time.
