My startpoint bearing went over Fallbrook so I went south, down 405 with short cut over 73.
May not be short cut though, but I thought it might by pass traffic on 5. When it dumped
back on 5 I looked in the rear view mirror and there was Scott N6MI coming up fast.
We zipped pass the 74 without even thinking and then I started getting bearing behind me.
Oh well they are probably reflections so I drove on. Stopped at the View point past
San Clemente and the bearings were still coming back towards Margarita Peak. Well might
be there but I decided to continue down to The 76 and around the 15. That way, if it were
farther south I would hear it.
When I got to the 15 there were strong signals north and west but not south except an
occasional blip, which looked liked reflections. So north on the 15 I went. On past the
Border Patrol station and past Temecula and the junction of the 215.
Now the bearing looked like they were coming from Ortega hwy. But I can't hear T1 any more.
It's identifying as T4.
I got off the 15 at Bundy Canyon Rd, Stopped at JIBs for lunch and then worked may way over
to Grand Ave and north west in case T4 might be just west of Lake Elsinore.
Around Lakeland Village I notice there is yet another T on the air. It was identifying as
T3 and it looks like it might be somewhere on Killen Trail, on the ridge above Lake Elsinore.
I went up Ortega Hwy and turn south on Killen Trail.
About 4 or 5 miles south I came upon T3 just to the east of the road. Damn! Dave,
Don and Steve, and Jippy had already signed in.
As I approach Elsinore Peak I heard yet another T. This one is a hissing sound and voice
ID's as KG6KZF and the bearing is pointing at the radio sight. Don and Steve are already
there sniffing so I drive down the dirt road towards where they are parked. Didn't see
them anywhere but as I was walking up the hill to sniff the T, I saw Don getting back
into his truck. After about an hour of going up and down trail, I give up. It looks like
the T is on the other side of the 15.
Back at the Jimmy I now can hear T1 again. Looks like it might be out towards Margarita
Peak again. Best way to get there is just continue on down the road I am on. But T4 is
somewhere in-between. Sure enough, about 2 miles south I come up T4 off to the east side
again. A short sniff and there it is. Strange, Don and Steve had missed this one.
Continuing on, to T1, I pass a road that has a sign that says "BAD ROAD". I hope I don't
have to go down that. However as I get miles farther I take a close look at the computer
map and it shows the road I am on goes quite a bit farther and then ends no where near
where I was wanting to go. So I turn around and end up going down that " BAD ROAD". It
was very bad but I have been on worse.
Finally getting down where I wanted to be, I get to the junction of Avenue la Cresta and
Tenala Rd and can't hear T1 anymore but T2 is quite strong. I decide to go after T2 (Error).
Back out to the 15 I go up los Alamos Rd and under the 215. Good signal here. In a short
time I find T2 on the side of a hill off Mary Pl. in Murrieta. Surprise, I am the first
one to find it.
Now on to get the voice KG6KZF T. It doesn't appear to be too far away. As it turned out
it was bout 5 miles northeast, on top of a hill, which is all but invisible in the dark.
After getting out and climbing have way up I decide to go back to the truck and try to
find a road to the top. The second time around the hill I see a dirt road that finely gets
me up. I got up to the top and turned to the left and went into the open area. When the T
came on it was weaker than it was just back around the corner. I went back there and got
out and sniffed.
After finding it there I got back in the jimmy and I heard T6 to the north. So I started
back down. When I got around to the north side of the hill T6 came on again. This time it
was back towards the top of the hill. So I found a wide place to turn around and almost
got stuck. Went back to the top and this time turned right and went to the open area on
that side, got out, and sniffed it out. So T6 and T7 (the voice T) were both on the top
of the hill.
After all the climbing I have had it so head home. Grate hunt Doug. Now you can start
hunting again.
