Bob's Story
WB6JPI

My bearing at the start pointed at Big Bear. My bearings through LA and at Green River /91 FWY all pointed at Big Bear. My bearings in San Bernardino pointed at Big Bear. No where did I ever get any indication that he was bouncing off of the mountains from behind. Only Big Bear ever litup. I went up 330 to Running springs and things stopped looking so much like Big Bear, but then I thought he might be under the rim (under Mt. R or something). I went on to Big Bear and
there was plenty of signal. On Hwy 18 above lake Baldwin, N6AIN and I together realized that the transmitter was not on Big Bear. 40 dB of attenuation and pointed off to the NE with 50 miles visibility to anything that might be reflecting.

I went down 18 to 247 to the east to Johnson Valley with still a NE bearing and concluded he must be on the LA side of the marine base. Two hours of Johnson Valley later, I concluded he was on the other side of the Marine Base. Back on 247 to Amboy. Bearings now are west, but 10 miles later they are again NE. Over to Kelbaker road north to 40, east to Essex road.
Essex road is the entrance to Providence Mountains State Park, where my bearings crossed, but the signals were so weak that I didn't have a lot of faith in them. I had 90 miles of gas left. Needles was 50 miles away and the road to the park was 15 miles so I could go to the park and then on
to Needles for gas, but Needles was a 100 mile round trip for nothing. He was probably in Nevada anyway..Barstow was 90 miles toward home (I didn't know if Ludlow had gas). So I
sat at Essex and the 40 for 10 minutes trying to make a decision...At that point I had 425 miles...it was 8:30 PM..I gave up and went home...no transmitters, not even close.
Total mileage for the day 703.
