ALL-DAY T-HUNT

Oct. 25, 2008

It was a dark and stormy night…No that was another hunt...It was a nice and sunny morning. I was busy with the contest on 20 Meters while driving to King’s and missed hearing some 5 transmitters until I got to the 105 Fwy. What were they doing on at 8 AM?

Had a fine English muffin and coffee at Kings and at 9:15 left for the start.  Met Deryl and soon several other regulars including Doug/Son, Don/Steve, Bob/Cathy. Since the transmitters were already on and many could be heard, we just chatted at the start until about 10:20. We all agreed that the bearing for all that could be heard (2 voice Ts, one CW and one AF6O-like tones/CW/tones) was between 355 and 10 degrees.

I went up the 405 to the 14 to Sand canyon to Fire Station 9 and found T7 voice T. Back down the road (going by T-1 for the second time without hearing it) and up the other side of Bear Divide toward Magic Mountain and found and several more Ts and Deryl. While at the next to most easterly T,  Don and Steve come wandering in from Mt Gleason. Picked off that last easterly T and went back to Bear Divide and carefully crept up the road to Fire Station 9 and finally got T-1. Took Little Tujunga home finding the third voice T on the way.  Now Scott claimed there were 8 transmitters, but I only heard 7 and found all seven. A great hunt.

When I met Bob  and Cathy during the hunt they extolled upon this eating place they had found in La Canada. As I hadn’t eaten all day (except for the muffin at Kings) I was now ravenous and searched and found the Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria on Foothill and Ocean View in La Canada This is a chain slowly expanding all over. See www.36pizza.com . Indeed it was great. They serve a 36 inch pizza that is awesome just to watch being made and will feed a small army. It takes two cooks to get it in the box. And their doors are special so you can get it out of the restaurant for take home. I had a $7.00 Big Deal which is a great Italian Salad, drink and a slice of pizza (a slice of 28 inch pizza, enough for two). I ate the whole thing.

A great hunt, great food, less than 100 miles, home by 8:PM
