All-Night Transmitter Hunt Oct 23-24

There were three transmitters on 146.565 and two more transmitters on 147.565. Because of the proximity to Halloween, each transmitter had a bag of candy.

The main transmitter, the "Tootsie Roll Pop" T (T1), was a 4W transmitter into a horizontal 15 element beam pointed at Palos Verdes and was located at Three Peaks which is north of San Simeon and on the border of the Hunter-Liggett military Reservation. Most hunters seem to have driven directly to this area. Several years ago a T was hidden at Cone Peak which is at the north end of mountain range.

The "Necco Waffer" T (T3) was a 50mW transmitter into a short whip and was located in a bush on a hill about 2/10 miles SE of T1. I thought this would be an easy T to find but some hunters drove 2 to 4 miles to find it and other never did find it.

The "Tootsie Roll" T (no T ID) was a 3W transmitter into the 6 element RJN "coat hanger" beam, horizontally polarized, pointed at Palos Verdes and was located on the north east side of Adler Peak, 7 miles north of Three Peaks.

The "Good and Plenty" T (T3) was a 2.5W transmitter on 147.565 using a 1/4 wave mag mount antenna on the T box and was located part way up a hill on West Camino Cielo Road, 2 miles east of Refugio Road (Broadcast Peak near Santa Barbara). From this location you can see Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez valley but it is shielded to the west, south and north. Additionally, I discovered that the road leading down to Solvang was closed leaving only Refugio Road from Hwy 101 as the only access. This T was positioned so that it could be used in case the primary T could not be heard at the starting point. The sign-in sheet said that there should be "Good and Plenty" of signal from T1 at this location. This T could be heard at T1 and many places in between.

The "Sweettart" T (T4) was a 400 mW transmitter on 147.565 near Ventura but appeared to have failed before anyone found it.

It seemed that most hunters drove directly to the T1 area as the mileage's were generally within 10% of each other for most transmitters. N6AIN / N6EKS had the best mileage for the Ts to the north but did continue on to find T2 to the south. Only KC6TNJ and N6MI continued on to find the "Good & Plenty" T near Broadcast Peak. Their reported mileage's were within 9 miles of each other out of 590 miles! The Crenshaw factors definitely came in handy.
