All Day
Hiders: Deryl N6AIN and Ray N6EKS
Where: Carrizo Plain National Monument, Just west of Maricopa
California,
south west Kern County.
Ray and I had checked out the site a few month back. Part of the plan
was to hide at least one T on, or in the San Andreas Fault. Took a
picture of the exact spot we planned to put the main T. It was dry and
dusty.
On Friday the 22nd, since there had been so much rain we checked to see
if the roads were still passable. No problem getting there but now
everything was green and damp.
T1 was on a small dirt road off another dirt road that comes east from
Soda Lake Road, a few miles north of the entrance to the Carrizo Plain
National Monument. It was running 65 watts into an 11 element beam.
T2, a squawkbox with a vertical 1/4 wave, was farther north on
Soda Lake Road at the end of a small dirt road that went east to a
spot where the San Andreas Fault crosses it. I put it in a bush coming
out of a crack in the ground.
T3, another squawkbox, was about 1/2 mile back south, strapped to a
water tank on the side of a road that goes west off Soda Lake Road.
Only 2 hunters came out. The first to find us was Bob WB6JPI at 4:30 PM,
using only his doppler. He complained about lots of reflections. Doug
WA6RJN showed up at 5:50 PM.
