Friday the 18th :
Ray N6EKS and I drive up to Fillmore to see if we can
find a useable site there. After trying all the dirt roads and finding
locked gates or private property signs, Ray suggests the one with the Adventure
Pass sign. Turns out it goes all the way back to the Sespe Condor sanctuary,
about 10 miles (FR-6N16). It starts at the end of Goodenough Road.
At 5 miles back we found that we could hear a 2 meter
repeater on PV. I checked a 220 Repeater there and was able to
bring it up. This seems like a good spot.
Friday the 25th:
Ray has other obligations and can't make it so I load up the Jimmy and head north to Fillmore. Good traffic and it takes only about an hour to get there.
After driving back up FR-6N16 to look around again, I decide to put the main T farther back on the road. It's higher and the spot where we checked first looks like a site where people come to do target shooting. It might be occupied on Saturday. I am also able to have a conversation with someone on the 220 repeater on PV at the new site.
Back down the hill to look for a low T site. The map showed that Grand, on the other side of the canyon from Goodenough Road, looks interesting. At the end of it, it's just a little over a 1/2 mile from where Goodenough Rd turns into the 6N16 but you can't get there without going all the way back into Fillmore. This is good.
Back in Fillmore, I get a motel room and spend the night.
Saturday the 26th:
Get up 6:00 AM, have terrible breakfast at I-HOP and go place the low T behind a pole at the end of Grand. It's timed to come on at 10:30 AM I hope. Now up 6N16 to hide the others.
10:00 AM, it's up and running and everyone hears it. Scott complains that it's too strong. Sorry but I don't want to open the box to turn it down because every time I do that I break something.
Now to hide the final T. I go further on the road. Lots of people shooting their guns so continue on. Find a nice spot where I can still hear T1, about 1/2 mile. I put Scott's T1 here.
Back down in Fillmore I go to the Rail Road museum. Now wait for people to show up. First one around 12:30 PM is KF6GQ and KD6LAJ.
Results.
