March 6, 1999 First Saturday T-Hunt

Hider: KF6RNL

There were four transmitters for this hunt, which was my first hide. From the start point hunters should have taken two different bearings, since one T was hidden in Diamond Bar, with 15W into a 4el quad doing a bounce off the San Gabriel mountains, and the other three were down south in Costa Mesa. The Diamond Bar T was a TNC, with as long an MCW ID as possible. The bounce and hilly location of this T was very confusing to some hunters. (Richard, we really didn't spin the antenna, or vary the power :-) The other three T's were near the Santa Ana River and the Costa Mesa Bluffs. The main T down south was the 'Elmer Fudd' T, with voice modulation "Be vewwy vewwy quiet, We are hunting Wabbits. Hehehehehe". It was at the west end of 19th St., up on a hill, running 340 mW, through a 3el yagi, vertizontal, pointing NW, roughly at the hill west of Newland in Huntington Beach. I was hoping to lure hunters over to the west side of the river, since there isn't very many ways to cross the river around there. There were two of Clarke's micro-T's within sight of each other somewhat north of the Fudd T. One was in Fairview park, just over the edge of the bluffs, running 5 mW into a horizontal dipole. A very good bearing could be taken from this T to the other micro-T, which was running 1 mW into a horizontal dipole, hanging from a bridge that crossed the Santa Ana River. The dipole had some cards taped to it, in hopes of catching the breeze and making it bounce around, which should have made S-meter readings very interesting. Alas, it was dead calm, so that dipole hung there without moving at all. Oh, well. The best access to this was from Lebard Park in Huntington Beach, buried in a residential zone up against the river. There was a paved path all the way to the bridge.

I want to thank all the hunters for hunting (and climbing hills) and those who helped with this hide, including AD6HR, who manned the Diamond Bar T until after 1 am, and KF6UZT and Leigh, who helped with the Southern three T's. I hope this proved to be a challenging, but fun hunt.

Congratulations to the three teams that found all four transmitters, and especially Clarke WB6ADC and Richard N6UZS, clearly the WINNERS!
